DC’s oldest village pharmacy fills Congress’ prescriptions

Just 4 blocks East of a Capitol building is Grubb’s Pharmacy: Washington, D.C.’s oldest village pharmacy, dating behind to 1867.

Grubb’s has a singular attribute with lawmakers nearby. The pharmacy brings drugs by a carload to members of a House and Senate, who can simply collect adult their medication deliveries during a Capitol’s Office of a Attending Physician (OAP), STAT initial reported.

The arrangement between Grubb’s and a Capitol has been in outcome given 1997 with deliveries to a OAP occurring scarcely each day. The OAP keeps a low profile, though lawmakers can find simple medical caring during a hospital for an annual price usually over $600, STAT reports.

“It’s really a special arrangement that no other pharmacy in a nation can contend that they have,” pharmacist and owners Mike Kim told STAT. “In other states, [a village pharmacy] competence fill prescriptions for maybe one or dual members. But this location, you’re removing like each member from all opposite a country. It’s really cool.”

Kim says he’s reduction starstruck by politicians who visit his pharmacy and that he’s gotten used to meaningful some of their many personal medical information.

“At initial it’s cool, and afterwards we realize, I’m stuffing some drugs that are for some flattering critical health problems as well. And these are a people that are using a country,” Kim told STAT, mentioning treatments for conditions like Alzheimer’s and diabetes.

“It creates we kind of lay behind and say, ‘Wow, they’re creation a top laws of a land and they competence not even remember what happened yesterday,” Kim said.

Later Wednesday, however, after a recoil on amicable media, Kim attempted to explain his comments on Alzheimer’s treatments for members of Congress.

“I am not wakeful of any member that indeed has Alzheimer’s and would positively not divulge any such information if we did know,” Kim told STAT, adding that “patient remoteness is a really critical matter that we am committed to upholding.”

The pharmacy bills lawmakers’ particular word skeleton as they would for any other customer. Kim says he does not yield special discounts, though that members of Congress infrequently get to skip a prolonged lines when they come in.

“The Capitol kind of takes rather of a dominance usually since of who we’re servicing,” Kim told STAT. “The member competence be job to say, ‘Hey, I’m about to leave in 5 minutes, where’s my drug? So [the clinicians during a Capitol] get into panic mode as well. we wouldn’t contend they’ve ever gotten undone with us, though it’s some-more of a regard like, ‘Oh my gosh, a member usually called us, we need to know where a drug is.'”

According to STAT, few lawmakers are wakeful of Grubb’s attribute with a OAP– in their consult of roughly dual dozen House and Senate members, usually Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Georgia, a former pharmacist himself, knew about Grubb’s.

“It’s a good event for us as pharmacists, also, to showcase what we do, since that’s accurately what we do is take caring of patients,” Carter told STAT. “This is another instance of how we go above and over the call of avocation to assistance people in health care.”
